It's 1907, and Lucy Honeychurch (Helena Bonham Carter) has embarked upon a tour of Italy before coming into her majority the next year. With her is her older cousin Charlotte (Dame Maggie Smith), who is dithery and anxious about proving herself a good chaperone. Things go immediately sideways when Lucy takes a look out of her bedroom window and realizes that it opens onto an alley instead of the splendor of Florence, as the signora who owns the place promised.
Complaining about the situation in the pensione's dining room draws the attention of fiery retired journalist Mr. Emerson (Denholm Elliott) and his morose railway worker son, George (Julian Sands). In spite of the weight of social propriety, Mr. Emerson cajoles an offended Charlotte into swapping rooms with the father and son, providing Lucy with the view she desires. There is, it seems, a reason behind this - Mr. Emerson is aware of George's depression and begs Lucy to be his son's friend. Shocked when Mr. Emerson reveals their family's atheism, Lucy demurs.
Fate sweeps the young couple together: first, George catches Lucy mid-faint in a piazza when they both witness a murder. Then, Lucy's poor Italian results in her cabdriver taking her to George during a group picnic. George is so moved by the sight of her in the springtime sunlight he kisses her. All of this finally restores George's wish to live and causes him to fall in love with Lucy. Lucy, in turn, begins to warm to George. But Charlotte sweeps Lucy away from George's reach before they can truly act on their feelings.
Back home on Summer Street in Surrey, Lucy and George are once again brought together. But they have two big problems: Lucy's still in denial about her feelings for him, and she has agreed to marry Cecil (Daniel Day-Lewis), a foppish society maven ruled by his mother who sees Lucy as someone to sharpen into the perfect hostess in spite of her nouveau riche country girl background. Which man will win her affection, and will Lucy ever learn her own heart?
Thoughts: I am mainly going to repeat my requests from last year here, because I have so many opinions but they haven't changed over the years. This movie has quietly eaten my brain over the past couple of years, as my AO3 account will tell you. I want all sorts of things out of this fandom. Feel free to import anything you like from the book canon to fill in and smooth out cracks, I'm well versed in it. My only caveat is that I don't like much of the book's epilogue, "A Room Without a View." Them being poor and the War making things difficult? Sure. George enlisting at the age of 50 (!!) discovering he likes murder and death instead of pacifism (?!) and cheating on Lucy the second they're on separate shores (?????!!!!!!!) not so much. Also even though it would be pretty fairly likely oddswise, I'd rather not read about George or Freddy dying in the first war. I already got enough of that from the 2007 ITV version, thank you! But feel free to have them serve, grapple a little with PTSD, etc.
My other caveat, as listed on my sign-up, is that if you're going to switch things up and either have them class-swap or put the movie in a different era or setting, please don't simplify the class difference between the two of them. By that I mean: do not simply make George a little poorer than Lucy, like Kevin Kwan did in "Sex and Vanity." They should be in two entirely different social or economic classes - and therein the tension.
Also, though I couldn't fit them in, I love Cecil, Marian, Minnie, The Miss Alans and Charlotte and would love to see them pop up in any minor role you might have for them, should you so feel they're necessary. Freddy/Ceil and Eleanor/Charlotte always welcomed!

* Christmas fic is VERY welcome in this fandom, I want the contrast between a Christmas with the Emersons and Christmas with the Honeychurches so very badly. You can give me any shared holiday between them, as a matter of fact, I'd love it.
* How shared children - Lucy and George's, or some foundling Freddy and George might find - complicates things.
* Everyone getting together and getting involved in a large party or mission. Perhaps they're celebrating the end of WWI or WWII, and times have changed, though they have not.
* Any of the AUS I have listed on my main list. An old Hollywood AU or any kind of modern AU would be fun with this group.
Lucy/George ship prompts:
* What if they had met earlier in canon - in England somewhere? At the National Gallery? Through Freddy? How does that change how their story goes?

* What if Lucy had been able to realize her feelings for George when he confesses his love to her at Windy Corner? Is the scandal bigger? Is Cecil less of a good sport about ending their engagement?
* Lucy goes through with her marriage to Cecil. Does it last? Do she and George fall into an affair? Do they come together after she's widowed or (gasp!) divorced, or they've both been widowed?
* Conversely, George kidnaps Lucy on her way to the altar, or they choose to run away together impulsively and leave Cecil standing at the altar. This is George's boldest move ever, so how shocked are they both by it.
* Since both Forester and the movie doesn't show us - how does Lucy find George in the wake of her halting the Greece trip and telling her mother and Charlotte she loves George? How does she admit she loves him to him? What does George make of Lucy's broken engagement? Which of them proposes? How and who do they tell about it?
* How do they cope with the long, arduous wait for Lucy's mother to (not) approve of their engagement? They have to survive the fall, Christmas, New Year's Eve and Boxing Day before spring arrives and they elope. What do they do?
* Christmas/New Year's/Boxing Day Fic!: Sleigh rides! Finding the perfect gift for one another! Baking together! Mistletoe canoodling!
* Elopement fic! How do they meet to run off? How do they marry - the Registrar's office, do they manipulate Mr. Beebe into doing the ceremony or do they marry at the Duomo in Florence like another Forster heroine? Who's there for the wedding? Where do they get the money for the Florence trip? How do they manage to plan this? How does George manage to keep his job at the railway and pad in time for a presumably long-enough honeymoon. * Florence journey fic. I want details of the apparently horrendous boat trip that lost their luggage twice (do they ever get it back?)!
* Wedding night sex. Honeymoon sex. Married sex! Premarital sex they try to hide from everyone in the months leading up to the wedding, or try to keep from going so far before the ceremony, unable to resist each other but worrying about torn rubbers and giggling servants. Or the rubber DOES tear and now they can't wait for her mother's approval anymore before they become an even bigger scandal. Sneaking off for a quick one while someone else has the kids. Post-kids-moving-out-sex. Older couple getting each other off at the silents, at the back lawn of Windy Corner, in various spots in their beloved room in Florence fic. How does their sex life change over the years, as they go from neophytes to veterans? Reunion sex after long absences. Anything like that!
* General honeymoon fic. What do they do and see in Florence? What do they write to Charlotte, to Freddy, to George's father? Does Lucy try to speak to her friends back home? Her mother? What is their relationship with the Signora like? What do they do and who do they meet when they're not in bed?
* Returning home, and any cozy domesticity (or not) therein. Do they move together to London, or does George commute to Surrey? Does Lucy scandalize her family by getting a job of some kind? How does she manage a servant-free household? Do they regain the Cissy? Try to buy it with Lucy's money? Lucy is shedding her neuvo riche childhood to be a working class wife - does her mother try to change this fact? does she? Is it easier or harder than she thought it would be?
* Any fic having to do with the Sacred Lake. Five times they visited? Unabashed PWP before or after the elopement?

* World War II-set fic. I can picture them both being highly antifash, though they're both in their fifties so it's Dad's Army agogo and volunteering for the Red Cross if they're going to serve. * 1950s or 1960s-set fic: In their sixties and seventies, seeing the rebirth of England out of the post-war depravation. Them traveling in their old age and examining old sights and old wounds. Dealing with very mod grandchildren!

Freddy, Lucy and George are, in a phrase, unbaked rolls by the time the book ends. I want stories about how they grow up, how their values change over the tumultuous centuries they would survive. Who they become and what purposes they find, basically. Compare that to Mr. Emerson, who is well-seasoned and swims and marinates well in his regrets.
Lucy Solo Prompts:
* Lucy through the years. Does she bob her hair? Set up a charity during the war? Become a suffragette? So much in the world will change from her birth to her death. How does she feel about it? I desperately want her to come into her own, to figure out who she is without someone telling her who she is, and for her to feel in her element instead of out of depth.
* How does she grow up? What sort of interests does she attain? How different is she than her molding?
* How she first discovered the piano, and her musicianship. Do her finances force her to go pro? Does she secretly write music and become well-known under her real name only in her dotage?
* Does she inherit Windy Corner or does it go to Freddy? Does she fight for it?
* I desperately want Lucy to have some friends of any sort because he comes off as rather isolated within her family.
* Lucy as a girl, fighting against or accepting the limitations foisted on her by gender and/or class, and how this changes.
* On any sort of adventure that prompts her to expand who she is.
George Solo Prompts:
* George's depression simply Is in the movie and the novel, though the movie doesn't hammer on the plot point as hard as the book does. He will enter the age of Freudian analysis as he grows. I'd love to see how his feelings about himself and life change - if he can learn to keep out of the dark even when Lucy's not there. How he copes with it. Does he try out therapy, as he ages?
* Does he change jobs or remain a clerk? Take advantage of his love of learning and philosophy to do something with it? Become a teacher, a philosopher, a writer, himself?
* George and philosophy; how he became interested, and how it colors his life.
* I would love to see George get some friends, too!
* I'm deeply charmed by the scene that takes place after George kisses Lucy where the elderly Italian lady sweeps George off to presumably be fed. What happens there, and what does he see during his long run back to the pensione.
* Younger George, coping with his mother's disappearance, his sense of loss and guilt and confusion guided by the love of his father.
Mr. Emerson solo prompts
* Young lion journalist Mr. Emerson, out there crusading for what's right. Which stories did he break? Who did he help? Did he get in trouble with his superiors at the paper for his opinionations?
* Discovering life as a lively and elderly man (likely less helpless than George thinks he is). Does he get himself into trouble? Shock George with his antics? Go on long sojourns by himself? While he must always be where George is, now that Lucy is there some separation must occur, no?
Freddy solo prompts (with some & George & Lucy ideas)
* Every time I watch this movie I wondered how on earth Freddy of all people became interested in the medical profession. Was Mr. Honeychurch senior a doctor and it's the family line? In spite of his 'unpromising' nature, is he just that good with people and/or solving problems?
* Freddy rebels and takes his talent for nonsense songs to the beer gardens and dance halls of London (and eventually the recording studio - hey, even the Andrews Sisters and Doris Day were recording novelty tunes in the 1940s and '30s!). Does he have hits? Fail and become a doctor after all?
* Freddy's queer awakening. How does it happen? Who is it with?
* What I really like about George setting his cap for Lucy is that he also comes more out of his shell thanks to his friendship with Freddy - so anything that covers their bonding as friends would be lovely.
George and Mr. Emerson (and some Lucy) Prompts
* Two men together, coping with grief (presumably). Were there other trips that failed to get George to embrace life? Other art galleries they went to after Florence, during George's endless post-Florence mooning over Lucy?
* Mister Emerson reenters the dating pool (with Charlotte? One of the Miss Alans? Someone else? Perhaps even a man?), scandalizing (or pleasing?) George.
* The novel decisively explains this, but since the movie does not: what on earth happened to George's mother in this adaptation? Is she dead tragically young, pointing up both Mister Emerson's nostalgic belief in love and George's questioning of the universe? Was there an ugly divorce and is she just waiting in the wings for George to marry into money?
* George (and/or Lucy) helping Mister Emerson out with some new story after her unretires from journalism.
* George becomes a husband and father - how does that change the connection between them? Can Mr. Emerson let go enough to allow their strong bond to expand, or does he become more cligy (and George, who tends to parent his father, become clingy in turn)? Does Lucy feel awkward about this? Do they argue about world events and take differing positions? Do George and Lucy feel strongly about some form of parenting that Mr. Emerson strongly opposes?

About: Good old fashioned cheesy 80's horror fun! Giles Redferne's wife was seduced and apparently murdered by a nameless, blond warlock. Having captured his quarry, Redferne prepares to have him executed, but Satan intervenes and sucks his acolyte into the future. Redferne follows. Stuck in 1980s Los Angles, the Warlock continues his mission to unmake the universe. Kassandra - the waitress who finds him -- soon makes following him down a personal mission after he curses her to age rapidly and kills her roommate, Chas. She and Giles become buddies on a road trip that will save the world -or end it.
My Thoughts: Once again, mainly repeating what I said last year. I would like crack, smut or worldbuilding here in equal amounts. I'd love the Warlock to be a little more complex than the black-and-white (but delightful) villain he becomes in the second movie - more hints as to his complexity -- as when he talks to the unbaptized boy before killing him or has enough honor in him to fight Giles without magical trickery -- is welcome. Or him simply being charmingly sociopathic would be fun!
My only DNW is the canon's unfortunate homophobia RE Chas.

Ted desperately wants to get promoted up the ladder at his firm. Though he's been told there's no holiday bonus this year, his boss invites him to an afterparty at his mansion to make up for it. Ted brings his wife, Tatum - and is shocked when his rival Gavin and HIS wife, Missy, are also invited. Steven introduces his wife, Kiwi -- and soon begins a series of head games intended to ferret out which of the two men will advance their careers at the firm. A wild time is had by all - and a secret revealed about the firm's history when it's through.
Thoughts: I love the wicked black humor of this canon, I love all of the ridiculous twists and turns. Steven is so wicked by Julian naturally makes him so charming - and all of the supporting players, including Kiwi and Missy and Tatum, are great. I love that - spoilers here! - Tatum ends up winning even though she wasn't competing. There's something great about all of this madness, so I just you to take these characters and bring them places!

Rose Red is a horrifically haunted house with a terrible history behind it. A group of paranormalists with varying skills are brought on by a college professor looking to explore -- and perhaps harness - the enormous amount of psychic energy Rose Red is putting out before it's demolished. Unfortunately, the house has a way of claiming those who enter it -- permanently.
Thoughts: Such a great haunted house story with loads of character chemistry. I enjoy all of these ships and also spookiness, and trenchant character studies.
